Robert E. Lee & Associates, Inc., was selected by WisDOT to provide construction administration and oversight of the painting of the STH 172 Bridge over the Fox River in Green Bay. STH 172 Bridge also spans 2 recreational trails and STH 57 (Riverside Drive). Era Valdivia Contractors of Chicago is the contractor on the $7.8 million dollar project.
Ninety-inch tall steel girders supporting the bridge are being blast cleaned to near white bare metal and then finished with three coats of paint. All waste paint blasted off must be contained and disposed of due to its lead content. There are 18 spans to the bridge with each span measuring 182 feet long, and there are 10 steel girders in each span. In addition to the 180 steel girders, there are countless cross frames, lateral stiffeners and longitudinal stiffeners that must also be blasted and painted.
The project started in summer of 2018 and was suspended over the winter months. They currently have eight spans almost complete and anticipate finishing by the end of October 2019.
