In order to accommodate the expansion of a cheese factory and whey plant in the City of Darlington’s Industrial Park, the existing lift station and downstream sewers needed to be upgraded. Robert E. Lee & Associates assisted the City of Darlington to obtain Clean Water Funding for this project. The existing lift station was 20 years old and consisted of two 540 gallons-per-minute submersible pumps. The pumps were upgraded to 750 gallons-per-minute submersible pumps with 40 horsepower motors. Internal wetwell piping, pump guide rails, all controls, and level sensing equipment were replaced, and variable speed drives were installed on the pumps for better energy efficiency. A bypass system was installed in the valve vault. Robert E. Lee & Associates also assisted the City in obtaining a new generator to run the lift station during power outages.

In addition, approximately 6,000 lineal feet of sanitary sewer with 10-inch to 15-inch sewer were replaced to increase capacity for handling the additional flows from the lift station.
